28 <br /> What are your Board/Commission's most important accomplishments? <br /> 1) The HRC held the 30th Annual Pauli Murray Awards on February 26, <br /> 2020, recognizing Mae McLendon (Adult), and Thea Barrett (Youth) as <br /> the award recipients. <br /> 2) A panel of the HRC conducted two Fair Housing Reconsideration <br /> Hearings (appeals). <br /> 3) Provided feedback to the Commission for the Environment as they <br /> sought to review grant applications through a social justice lens. <br /> 4) Expanded the Community Book Read to include a broader array of <br /> events in addition to the book discussion (author discussion; community <br /> discussion; community education event regarding safe voting during a <br /> pandemic in collaboration with DemocracyNC). This year's book was <br /> "Give Us the Ballot" by Ari Berman. <br /> 5) Surveyed/reviewed membership makeup of other boards/commissions <br /> in response to BOCC inquiry regarding diversity/representation on <br /> boards. <br /> 6) Participated in the BOCC Listening Session re: racialized policing. <br /> List of Specific Tasks, Events, or Functions Performed or Sponsored Annually. <br /> 1) Provide proclamations recognizing Human Rights Week, Human Rights <br /> Day, and the Bill of Rights Day in December of each year, Human <br /> Relations Month in February, Fair Housing Month in April, and Women's <br /> History Month in March. <br /> 2) Organize and sponsor the annual Pauli Murray Awards ceremony. <br /> 3) Coordinate the Community Book Read <br /> 4) Plan and hold Women's History Month event <br /> 5) Coordinate Community Conversations <br /> Describe this board/commission's activities/accomplishments in carrying out <br /> BOCC goal(s)/priorities, if applicable. <br /> The HRC's annual events and conversations carry out the BOCC's <br /> underlying values for all of their goals including "bridg[ing] diverse cultural <br /> populations and values" and focusing on "social justice values". <br /> Specifically, the HRC encourages communication and understanding <br /> across all cultures and values within Orange County through its <br /> community conversations. Further, the HRC "foster[s] a community culture <br /> that rejects oppression and inequity" through its recognition of residents <br /> that fight for social justice and promote equality during the annual Pauli <br /> Murray Awards. Finally, the HRC's Community Conversations "enable full <br /> civic participation" by providing opportunities for public comment and <br /> discussion on issues important to the community members. <br />
