17 <br /> WHEREAS, the United States has recently surpassed over 500,000 deaths from COVID-19; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, our frontline health care and essential workers have faced incredible challenges as <br /> we battled the pandemic and continue providing the services our residents need; and <br /> WHEREAS, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a physical, mental and emotional toll on our <br /> frontline health care and essential workers and residents; and <br /> WHEREAS, our county, state and nation are grieving the hundreds of thousands lives lost as <br /> well as personal, financial, economic and other impacts of the pandemic; and <br /> WHEREAS, we continue to fight the pandemic by caring for those battling the virus, continuing <br /> our research on treatment and prevention, and vaccinating our residents; and <br /> WHEREAS, we will continue working together as a community until we can bring an end to the <br /> COVID-19 pandemic; <br /> NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Orange County Board of Commissioners that <br /> March 3, 2021 is declared a Day of Reflection for the lives lost and severely impacted by the <br /> COVID-19 pandemic. This day will also recognize the hard work, dedication and sacrifices of <br /> our frontline health care and essential workers that have selflessly served our community during <br /> this time. <br /> This the 2nd day of March, 2021. <br /> Renee Price, Chair <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> A motion was made by Commissioner Hamilton, seconded by Commissioner Dorosin, to <br /> approve and authorize the Chair to sign the resolution recognizing March 3, 2021 as a day of <br /> reflection, commemorating the first North Carolinian diagnosed with COVID-19. <br /> Roll call ensued <br /> VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> Emily Ziegler, UNC Director of Local Government Affairs, said the battle is not yet over, <br /> but reflected on the perseverance of the community. She said health care workers have <br /> worked tirelessly over the past year. She said UNC Health is always here as a partner for <br /> Orange County. <br /> Commissioner McKee thanked the Health Department for everything it is doing to get <br /> the community vaccinated. <br /> Commissioner Bedford reiterated Commissioner McKee's remarks. She said she is <br /> grateful for public health workers, and noted the care that the Health Department is working to <br /> identify those in the community who are disproportionately harmed by Covid. <br /> Chair Price said the work the Public Health Department is doing is phenomenal. <br />
