9 <br /> 1 <br /> 2 WHEREAS, Ms. Grebenkemper is retiring from her efforts to lead PORCH Hillsborough; and <br /> 3 <br /> 4 WHEREAS, through her service with countless others, Ms. Grebenkemper has changed lives <br /> 5 by helping people to have adequate and nutritious food, to navigate their journey to health and <br /> 6 self-respect, and empowering them and their families to lead productive lives; <br /> 7 <br /> 8 NOW THEREFORE we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize and <br /> 9 express deep appreciation, gratitude, and respect for Nancy Grebenkemper for her dedicated <br /> 10 leadership and her service to the people of Orange County, and we wish her all the best in her <br /> 11 future endeavors. <br /> 12 <br /> 13 This the 2nd day of February, 2021. <br /> 14 <br /> 15 <br /> 16 Renee Price, Chair <br /> 17 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 18 <br /> 19 A motion was made by Commissioner Fowler, seconded by Commissioner Hamilton to <br /> 20 approve the proclamation recognizing and expressing appreciation to Nancy Grebenkemper for <br /> 21 her service to the people of Orange County through PORCH Hillsborough and wishing her well <br /> 22 in her future endeavors, and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 23 <br /> 24 Roll call ensued <br /> 25 <br /> 26 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 27 <br /> 28 Anna Waters congratulated Ms. Grebenkemper. <br /> 29 Sarah Zink said she was a wonderful mentor, and thanked Ms. Grebenkemper for her <br /> 30 service. <br /> 31 Karen Sindelar relayed the challenges of addressing the community's needs and praised <br /> 32 Ms. Grebenkemper's efforts. <br /> 33 Karin Yoch described the efforts of running the organization, and said she admired Ms. <br /> 34 Grebenkemper. <br /> 35 Chair Price thanked Ms. Grebenkemper for all she's done for Orange County to ensure <br /> 36 no one goes hungry. <br /> 37 Ms. Grebenkemper expressed appreciation for everyone's kind words, and for the <br /> 38 support of the community. <br /> 39 <br /> 40 c. Black History Month Proclamation <br /> 41 The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation designating February 2021 as <br /> 42 Black History Month in Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> 43 Chair Price introduced the item, and Commissioner Hamilton read the resolution: <br /> 44 <br /> 45 BACKGROUND: <br /> 46 Carter G. Woodson and three others started black History Month, proclaimed by every president <br /> 47 since 1976. These Black Americans formed the Association for the Study of Negro Life and <br /> 48 History (ASNLF), which started the idea of Black History Month in 1915, at the celebration of the <br /> 49 fiftieth anniversary of emancipation in Washington, DC. The ASNLF, an organization whose <br /> 50 mission was to research and promote the achievements of Black Americans and other people of <br /> 51 African descent. The first celebration was during the week in February that encompassed <br />
