Neuse River waterdog (Necturus lewisi)
The Neuse River waterdog is an aquatic salamander with flame-like gill extensions, a whip for
a tail, and legendary hunting abilities. The species grows up to a foot long and is known to hunt
everything from lampreys and worm snakes to centipedes, crayfish, salamanders, snails, fishes, and
spiders. Like the Carolina madtom, the Neuse River waterdog is only found in the Neuse River and
Tar River drainages of central and eastern North Carolina. The waterdog is also in steep decline, with
entire populations already lost due to habitat destruction and water pollution. The species has already
been wiped out from over a third of its range. Last year, the Service proposed to list the Neuse River
waterdog as "threatened,"and to protect 738 river miles of its critical habitat under the federal
Endangered Species Act. 84 Fed. Reg. 23,644 (May 22, 2019). The State of North Carolina
recognizes the Neuse River waterdog as a Species of Special Concern.
Water pollution from the proposed Efland Station would travel Sevenmile Creek and empty
into proposed Unit 7 of the Neuse River waterdog's critical habitat. The impacted Eno River critical
habitat unit is 41.5 river miles long, starts at highway NC 86, and ends at the inundated portion of Falls
Lake. 84 Fed. Reg. 23,675-76 (May 22, 2019). Over 20 miles of this critical habitat unit would be
impacted by Buc-ees' pollution.
Map of Unit 7 - Eno River Critical Habitat Unit for Neuse River Waterdog
.. # rson County.NC
CaswoN County.NC
c;
P101,n Fun Clare R,e
Granvi€Ie County,.NC
9uFne
neuC
- ,NC
rf A
bran Cavnty,NC
rho r Coonty roc
_ 00 ..
' 77
New Hope Greek _ -
0 3 B 12 Wes
t a 6 ] Major Rivers
r
critical Habitat
0. 4.5 9 1B Kd ameters
County Boundaries
city Boundaries
Page 3
