DocuSign Envelope ID:C4DAF5FC-8B52-4557-B62F-2082B23CDD20
Project Goals I have two main goals:
1) The students in my jazz combo class are very new to improv. Of
my class of 13, only 2 of them are veterans. This means, of course,
that 11 of them are brand new to improv. I have been working with
them so far in the school year, but I would love to have a jazz artist
come into my virtual classroom to help them develop strategies that
they can use to build their improv vocabulary so that they feel less
inhibited as they approach solo passages in their jazz charts. Of
particular concern are my two drum set players who are brand new to
jazz from a rock background. While this isn't a new phenomenon, I
would like to help them develop an ear for jazz. Bringing in a jazz
specialist would help to build their skill sets.
2) By watching the clinicians, I feel that I would become a better
teacher by feeling more at ease in teaching improv to future classes.
Cirruculum and Jazz band is a class offered at my school and not a club like would
Enrichment be the case for many schools. The jazz combo course follows NC
Standard Course of Study Objectives and adheres to the national
curriculum objectives as well.
Audience Description This class is 10-12th grade students, mostly caucasian with about
25%asian students. This year's group is mostly male with one
female.
Artist Description I would like to bring in Avery Linderman to assist with this project.
Avery Linderman is a jazz guitarist, but also has extensively studied
jazz drum set during his time as a jazz studies student at UNC-Chapel
Hill. Currently, Avery is a founding member of the Avery Linderman
quartet that, pre-pandemic, has regularly played at the Sharp Nine
Gallery. After graduating from the great jazz program at Panther
Creek HS, Linderman went on to study jazz at UNC-Chapel Hill with
Jim Ketch and has since gone on to create his own band. I would
love to bring in Mr. Linderman because he was highly recommended
and because of his experience, he can address both the needs of the
melodic instrument players as well as drum set players.
Are you hiring No
multicultural artists
with the requested
funds from this
grant?
How will you I will monitor my student's ability to perform the scales/arpeggios of
evaluate the success the pieces of music that they are working on as well as solicit
of the program? feedback from Mr. Linderman as to the level of involvement from the
student-musicians themselves. It will be a mixture of formal and
informal assessments.
PROJECT/PROGRAMPlease fill out the charts below with your project's expenses and
BUDGET income. Use the "Explanation" box to offer details for each category.
NOTE: The Total Cash Expense must equal the Total Cash Income.
