ATTACHMENT 5 37 STATUS OF PROJECTS IN 2004-2010 TIP PRIORITY LIST ORANGE COUNTY PROJECTS OUTSIDE THE DURHAM-CHAPEL HILL-CARRBORO METROPOLITAN PLANNING AREA Orange County would like to give priority to identified safety needs on existing roads and bridges, to other transportation projects which foster alternatives to automobile travel, and to projects that minimize adverse impacts on the natural environment and cultural sites. The County also endorses environmentally responsible construction of all transportation projects. Finally, the County supports adequate maintenance for existing transportation facilities. 1} Park and Ride Lot in the Buckhorn Economic Development District: Orange County requests a park and ride facility (from the adopted Orange County Economic Development District Design Manual} be funded in the Community Transportation Improvement Program for Orange Public Transportation. This project is clearly justified, as it would provide an opportunity for coordination of public transportation efforts between two growing regions in North Carolina, the Triad and Triangle. Status: Orange County Commissioners, at their meeting on August 19, will consider awarding a contract to Wilbur Smith Associates to conduct an update of the Community Transportation Improvement Plan. The Steering Team for that endeavor should discuss park and ride lots, in general and the one proposed for the Buckhorn EDD in particular, as part of the CTIP. The CTIP is a 5-year plan and may not perceive the need for the park and ride lot within that time frame. (Does OPT plan to extend service to that area in that time frame?) However, park and ride lots should be considered in updates to fhe transportation section of the Land Use Plan and in conjunction with any proposed development within the EDD.
