The campaign celebrates mentoring and the positive effect it can have on young lives, <br /> 2 with goals to: <br /> 3 • Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms; <br /> 4 • Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young <br /> 5 people; and <br /> 6 • Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their <br /> 7 constituents in mentoring. <br /> 8 <br /> 9 Mentoring is a critical component in young people's lives, helping them make the decisions and <br /> 10 connections that lead to opportunity. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PROCLAMATION <br /> 13 NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH <br /> 14 <br /> 15 WHEREAS, January 2021 marks the 19th anniversary of National Mentoring Month, an annual <br /> 16 campaign to focus attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us can work <br /> 17 together to increase the number of mentors to help ensure positive outcomes for our young <br /> 18 people; and <br /> 19 <br /> 20 WHEREAS, Orange County honors volunteer mentors who support young people by showing <br /> 21 up for them and demonstrating their commitment to helping them thrive; and <br /> 22 <br /> 23 WHEREAS, mentoring programs such as MENTOR North Carolina make our communities and <br /> 24 our state stronger by building meaningful relationships that increase social capital for young <br /> 25 people and provide invaluable support networks; and <br /> 26 <br /> 27 WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, mentoring programs have stepped up to fill gaps <br /> 28 for young people and families, connecting them with resources and ensuring that mentoring <br /> 29 relationships continue virtually to ensure social connection despite physical distancing; and <br /> 30 <br /> 31 WHEREAS, mentoring plays a pivotal role in career exploration and supports workplace skills <br /> 32 by helping young people set career goals, equipping mentors with the skills needed to support <br /> 33 the professional growth of young people, and driving positive outcomes for young people and <br /> 34 businesses; and <br /> 35 <br /> 36 WHEREAS, quality mentoring promotes healthy relationships and communication, self-esteem, <br /> 37 emotional growth and well-being for young people; and <br /> 38 <br /> 39 WHEREAS, students who meet regularly with their mentors are more than 52 percent less likely <br /> 40 than their peers to skip a day of school, and youth who face an opportunity gap and have a <br /> 41 mentor are 55 percent more likely to be enrolled in college than those who without a mentor; <br /> 42 and <br /> 43 <br /> 44 WHEREAS, youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 46 percent less likely than their <br /> 45 peers to start using drugs and 27 percent less likely to start drinking; and <br /> 46 <br /> 47 WHEREAS, almost half of adults today report having a mentor in their youth and those rates <br /> 48 appear to have been rising steadily over the past several decades, and <br /> 49 <br />
