As a commissioner, Alice <br /> served as both Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. <br /> Alice Gordon's other honors and awards include the 2006 Goodmon Award presented by <br /> Leadership Triangle for"Exemplary Regional Leadership by an Elected Official" and her <br /> designation as a "Town Treasure" by the Chapel Hill Historical Society in 2012. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board congratulate former <br /> Orange County Commissioner Dr. Alice M. Gordon for receiving The Order of the Long Leaf <br /> Pine award. <br /> Chair Price said Commissioner Gordon has served as a mentor to her, and she was <br /> delighted to write a letter to the Governor recommending this award. She said the award is long <br /> overdue. <br /> Commissioner Bedford said Commissioner Gordon did exemplary work for the <br /> community, and was an inspiration to women interested in politics. <br /> Senator Mike Woodard said he, too, was delighted to join the chorus in nominating and <br /> recommending Dr. Gordon for this award. He said he has enjoyed working with Dr. Gordon, <br /> and she stands out as one of the hardest working and most knowledgeable public servants he <br /> has ever seen. He said they share an interest in protecting the environment and regional <br /> transportation, and have served on many committees together. He said his work with Dr. <br /> Gordon has made him a better legislator. <br /> Representative Insko said she and Dr. Gordon served on the BOCC together, as the <br /> fourth and fifth female Commissioners. She said Dr. Gordon is a feminist and a norm breaker, <br /> from whom she has learned a great deal. <br /> Carrboro Town Council member Randee Haven O'Donnell said she was happy to initiate <br /> this nomination, and said Dr. Gordon has served with exemplary leadership in everything she <br /> has done. She said she has a laser like focus, and has made significant contributions to the <br /> County, with special focus on the environment, in school excellence, and regional <br /> transportation. She offered her congratulations to Dr. Gordon. <br /> Representative Graig Meyer expressed his congratulations to Dr. Gordon. He said Dr. <br /> Gordon's public service is done, but her advocacy is most certainly not. He said she is an <br /> active participant in many local meetings. He said he is disappointed that this award cannot be <br /> presented in person. He read the text of the award. <br /> Former Commissioner Gordon thanked all for their kind comments, and said she is <br /> overwhelmed by their generosity. She thanked all for serving with her over the years. She <br /> recognized her husband and family, and thanked them for their partnership in her years of <br /> public service. She said she is very grateful for this award. <br /> Commissioner Greene congratulated Dr. Gordon, and thanked her for her <br /> encouragement and mentorship over the years. <br /> Commissioner McKee congratulated Dr. Gordon, and thanked her for being a mentor to <br /> him.
