11
PUBLIC COMMENT:
None
A motion was made by Commissioner McKee, seconded to by Commissioner Fowler to
close the public hearing.
Roll call ensued
VOTE: UNANIMOUS
Bonnie Hammersley said this item will come up for Board approval at the January 19t"
BOCC meeting. She said written public comments can be received for another 24 hours.
John Roberts said the BOCC can approve the item, leaving the 24 hour written comment
period, especially if there is a deadline to meet. He said if no comments are received, the vote
will stand, and if comments do come in, the BOCC can hold another vote, thereafter.
Theo Letman said there is a pending deadline.
Bonnie Hammersley asked if the BOCC would vote on the item to allow staff to meet its
deadline.
A motion was made by Commissioner Fowler, seconded by Commissioner Greene to
approve the item.
Commissioner Dorosin referred to the 100,000 miles requirement for the retirement of a
vehicle, and said this seems awfully low. He said most vehicles can run longer. He asked if
there is any flexibility on this number, and if there is any return on the sale of these vehicles.
Theo Letman said these are cutaway vans, and 100,000 miles is the federal standard.
He said these vans are run hard, and many of them are over 100,000 miles. He said viable
vehicles can be used as spare vehicles, and others are auctioned off.
Commissioner Dorosin said this seems wasteful, and he would like to bring this up to the
legislature.
Commissioner McKee said community centers are often in need of transportation
vehicles, and asked if these older vehicles could be used for such a purpose.
Theo Letman said yes, it is possible. He said as long as the federal interest has been
satisfied, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) can be petitioned for use of the vehicles for
County purposes. He said the BOCC approved, and staff procured, three vans for the
community centers, but that does not prevent some of these viable vehicles from also being
used for other purposes.
Commissioner Fowler asked if the funds raised from the sale of vehicles are used for a
particular purpose.
Theo Letman said these funds are intended to go back into the program for further
vehicle replacement.
Commissioner Dorosin asked if purchased vehicles can be hybrid or electric.
Theo Letman said yes, and staff is looking into these options. He said the state contract
has electric options with larger mass transit vehicles (such as buses), but he hopes that smaller
electric vehicles will be added to the state contract.
Roll call ensued
VOTE: UNANIMOUS
