1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: February 2, 2021 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 6-b <br /> SUBJECT: Appointments to the Orange County Justice Advisory Council <br /> DEPARTMENT: Criminal Justice Resource <br /> Department <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Orange County Justice Advisory Council — Caitlin Fenhagen, (919) 245-2303 <br /> Current Structure and Appointees <br /> PURPOSE: To consider making changes to the Justice Advisory Council (JAC) structure and <br /> approving associated appointments to the Justice Advisory Council. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Orange County Board of Commissioners created the Justice Advisory <br /> Council (JAC) at its regular meeting on May 17, 2016. The Council coordinates, informs and <br /> enhances work in the criminal justice system and in the Orange County Criminal Justice Resource <br /> (CJR) Department. Its formation is aligned with the best practices for the administration of an <br /> effective, innovative and equitable criminal justice system. <br /> The JAC staff is recommending the following position changes: <br /> • Add a position for the University of North Carolina Police Department and appoint UNC <br /> Chief of Police David Perry to the position. <br /> • Add a position for the Orange County Housing and Community Development Department <br /> and appoint Director Emila Sutton to the position. <br /> • Add a position for the Orange County Human Rights and Relations Department and <br /> appoint Director Annette Moore to the position. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goals are applicable <br /> to this item: <br /> • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br /> INEQUITY <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or ethnic <br /> background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic status. <br />
