ORANGE COUNTY 1
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: February 2, 2021
Action Agenda
Item No. 4-b
SUBJECT: Proclamation Recognizing and Expressing Appreciation to Nancy
Grebenkemper
DEPARTMENT: County Commissioners
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT:
Proclamation Greg Wilder, 919-245-2300
PURPOSE: To consider a proclamation recognizing and expressing appreciation to Nancy
Grebenkemper for her devotion and service to the people of Orange County through PORCH
Hillsborough.
BACKGROUND: In 2011 Nancy Grebenkemper and Claire Millar observed the impact of the
recession, the reality that residents having enough food to eat was a major issue in Orange
County, and that the number of people seeking food assistance at the Orange Congregations in
Missions (OCIM) food pantry was large and increasing.
Ms. Grebenkemper and Ms. Millar learned about PORCH Chapel Hill Carrboro, and with help
from three PORCH Chapel Hill Carrboro founders, Ms. Grebenkemper and Ms. Millar started
PORCH Hillsborough, which has since grown from three neighborhoods to over 30, and overall
donations have grown each year since 2011 and include businesses in the Meadowlands
Business Park donating food on a monthly basis. PORCH Hillsborough has also established the
Food for Schools program and Food for Families program to ensure students and families in the
community get enough to eat.
Ms. Grebenkemper has recently announced her plans to retire from her efforts to lead PORCH
Hillsborough.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with consideration of the
proclamation.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: There is no Orange County Social Justice Goal impact associated
with consideration of the proclamation.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal
impact associated with consideration of the proclamation.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve and authorize the
Chair to sign the attached proclamation recognizing and expressing appreciation to Nancy
Grebenkemper for her service to the people of Orange County through PORCH Hillsborough and
wishing her well in her future endeavors.
