5 <br /> 1 create the joint 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan, the first plan for the entire Triangle <br /> 2 region, a successful endeavor that received a national planning award in 2009. <br /> 3 <br /> 4 Before becoming a commissioner, Alice was Chair of the Orange County Planning Board and <br /> 5 President of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools PTA Council. As a commissioner, Alice <br /> 6 served as both Chair and Vice Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 Alice Gordon's other honors and awards include the 2006 Goodmon Award presented by <br /> 9 Leadership Triangle for"Exemplary Regional Leadership by an Elected Official" and her <br /> 10 designation as a "Town Treasure" by the Chapel Hill Historical Society in 2012. <br /> 11 <br /> 12 RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board congratulate former <br /> 13 Orange County Commissioner Dr. Alice M. Gordon for receiving The Order of the Long Leaf <br /> 14 Pine award. <br /> 15 <br /> 16 Chair Price said Commissioner Gordon has served as a mentor to her, and she was <br /> 17 delighted to write a letter to the Governor recommending this award. She said the award is long <br /> 18 overdue. <br /> 19 Commissioner Bedford said Commissioner Gordon did exemplary work for the <br /> 20 community, and was an inspiration to women interested in politics. <br /> 21 Senator Mike Woodard said he, too, was delighted to join the chorus in nominating and <br /> 22 recommending Dr. Gordon for this award. He said he has enjoyed working with Dr. Gordon, <br /> 23 and she stands out as one of the hardest working and most knowledgeable public servants he <br /> 24 has ever seen. He said they share an interest in protecting the environment and regional <br /> 25 transportation, and have served on many committees together. He said his work with Dr. <br /> 26 Gordon has made him a better legislator. <br /> 27 Representative Insko said she and Dr. Gordon served on the BOCC together, as the <br /> 28 fourth and fifth female Commissioners. She said Dr. Gordon is a feminist and a norm breaker, <br /> 29 from whom she has learned a great deal. <br /> 30 Carrboro Town Council member Randee Haven O'Donnell said she was happy to initiate <br /> 31 this nomination, and said Dr. Gordon has served with exemplary leadership in everything she <br /> 32 has done. She said she has a laser like focus, and has made significant contributions to the <br /> 33 County, with special focus on the environment, in school excellence, and regional <br /> 34 transportation. She offered her congratulations to Dr. Gordon. <br /> 35 Representative Graig Meyer expressed his congratulations to Dr. Gordon. He said Dr. <br /> 36 Gordon's public service is done, but her advocacy is most certainly not. He said she is an <br /> 37 active participant in many local meetings. He said he is disappointed that this award cannot be <br /> 38 presented in person. He read the text of the award. <br /> 39 Former Commissioner Gordon thanked all for their kind comments, and said she is <br /> 40 overwhelmed by their generosity. She thanked all for serving with her over the years. She <br /> 41 recognized her husband and family, and thanked them for their partnership in her years of <br /> 42 public service. She said she is very grateful for this award. <br /> 43 Commissioner Greene congratulated Dr. Gordon, and thanked her for her <br /> 44 encouragement and mentorship over the years. <br /> 45 Commissioner McKee congratulated Dr. Gordon, and thanked her for being a mentor to <br /> 46 him. He said she is most deserving of the award. <br /> 47 Commissioner Hamilton echoed the comments above, and said it was wonderful to work <br /> 48 with Dr. Gordon. <br /> 49 Commissioner Fowler congratulated Dr. Gordon, and thanked her for her service. <br /> 50 Commissioner Dorosin extended congratulations on a well-deserved honor. <br />
