5 <br /> 1 WHEREAS, when Judge Fox was diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of bone marrow <br /> 2 cancer, he bravely fought and conquered the disease while raising awareness of the critical <br /> 3 need for bone marrow and cord blood donors through his Save the Fox campaign, which <br /> 4 continues to register thousands of donors; and <br /> 5 <br /> 6 WHEREAS, Judge Fox has sought to address issues of racism and inequality in 15B and <br /> 7 beyond by raising awareness and ensuring the removal of symbols with racist legacies in our <br /> 8 court rooms; and <br /> 9 <br /> 10 WHEREAS, Judge Fox has been a beloved member of the local Judicial Bar and the community <br /> 11 for many years and his compassion, humor and example have touched the lives of so many <br /> 12 individuals that have appeared before him and that have had the opportunity to know or work <br /> 13 for him. He has never met a stranger and he will be missed deeply; and <br /> 14 <br /> 15 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 16 expresses its congratulations upon Judge Fox's retirement and extends its deepest <br /> 17 appreciation, gratitude and respect for his leadership, courage and service throughout the court <br /> 18 system for the residents of Orange County. <br /> 19 <br /> 20 This the 20th day of October 2020. <br /> 21 <br /> 22 Penny Rich, Chair <br /> 23 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 24 <br /> 25 A motion was made by Commissioner Dorosin, seconded by Commissioner Price to <br /> 26 adopt the Resolution, and authorize the Board Chair to sign the Resolution. <br /> 27 <br /> 28 Chair Rich called each Commissioner by name (roll call). <br /> 29 <br /> 30 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 31 <br /> 32 Judge Carl Fox expressed appreciation, and said it is a true honor to receive this <br /> 33 recognition. He said he is so thankful to be present tonight, and expressed thanks to his wife, <br /> 34 sister, sister-in-law and father-in-law. He said this year he celebrates five years from his first <br /> 35 diagnosis with cancer. He said he did not plan to stay around for 42 years, but he loves Orange <br /> 36 and Chatham counties. He said he is grateful to the citizens of both counties. <br /> 37 Judge Carl Fox said it has always been a pleasure to work in this community. He said <br /> 38 he was fortunate to work in such a community, where he enjoyed coming to work. <br /> 39 Judge Carl Fox said when he started working he hired more women District Attorneys <br /> 40 (DA), and always hired based on qualifications. He said everything is not perfect, but it should <br /> 41 be everyone's goal to leave a place better than how they found it. He said he would rather be <br /> 42 remembered for being a good person, than a good judge or excellent jurist. <br /> 43 Commissioner Price said Judge Carl Fox started his career in a very different era, and <br /> 44 he has created a pathway for young people. She expressed appreciation for his service. <br /> 45 Judge Carl Fox said he is most proud of his internship program for young people. <br /> 46 Chair Rich said she had the honor of meeting Judge Carl Fox when she was on the <br /> 47 Chapel Hill Town Council.
