1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: November 17, 2020 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 7-a <br /> SUBJECT: Update from the Orange County Food Council <br /> DEPARTMENT: County Manager - Orange <br /> County Food Council <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Power Point Presentation Ashley Heger, Food Council Coordinator <br /> 404-587-6905 <br /> PURPOSE: To receive an update from the Food Council about activities in the 2020 - 2021 fiscal <br /> year and a preliminary report on the state of food insecurity during the Covid19 pandemic. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Food Council Coordinator was hired in July 2019. This new Coordinator <br /> position was approved through an interlocal agreement process and is jointly funded by Orange <br /> County, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough and Carrboro. The Coordinator is charged with coordinating the <br /> Food Council and helping it achieve its goals. This presentation will provide an update of the <br /> Coordinator's work and progress since July 2019 plus an overview of the Food Council's actions <br /> and plans in the 2020 - 2021 fiscal year. The Coordinator will also be providing an update about <br /> food insecurity in the County during the Covid19 pandemic. A food security presentation was <br /> shared during the County Commissioner's board retreat in January 2020 and the update will focus <br /> on new information gathered since the start of the pandemic. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with receiving this update. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County social justice goals applicable to this <br /> item. <br /> • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND <br /> INEQUITY <br /> The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; <br /> religious or philosophical beliefs; sex, gender or sexual orientation; national origin or ethnic <br /> background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic status. <br /> • GOAL: ENSURE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY <br /> The creation and preservation of infrastructure, policies, programs and funding necessary <br /> for residents to provide shelter, food, clothing and medical care for themselves and their <br /> dependents. <br />
