Buc-ee’s – Efland, NC

27

6.8 I-40 WB Service Road – East RI/RO Site Driveway

The current site plan proposes constructing a right-in/right-out (RI/RO) driveway on the I-40 WB
Service Road approximately 750 feet west of the US-70/I-40 Connector. The following
improvements are recommended to accommodate projected site traffic demands:

• Construct the site driveway as a right-in/right-out access, with one ingress lane and one
egress lane
• Remove the existing I-40 WB Exit Ramp (WB Exit 160)
• Widen the westbound I-40 WB Ramp to provide a continuous through lane and a continuous
shared through/right-turn lane on I-40 WB Service Road through this intersection, tying into
the existing two-lane cross section on the I-40 WB Service Road just west of the exiting WB
Exit 160 Ramp junction.

With the recommended improvements in place, the southbound approach (East RI/RO Site
Driveway) is expected to operate with short delays in the build-out traffic condition. SimTraffic
simulations indicate that maximum queues on the westbound approach are expected to be less
than 25 feet in all peak hours. Therefore, no additional improvements are recommended at this
intersection to accommodate site traffic.

Table 6.8 summarizes the operation of the intersection for the projected (2023) build-out traffic
condition.

Table 6.8
Level-of-Service
I-40 WB Service Road – East RI/RO Site Driveway (Unsignalized)*
Condition AM Peak Hour
LOS (Delay)
PM Peak Hour
LOS (Delay)
Saturday Peak Hour
LOS (Delay)
Build-out (2022) Traffic SB – A (2.4) SB – A (3.3) SB – A (3.7)
* Note: HCM methodology does not report an overall level of service for unsignalized intersections.
