Buc-ee’s – Efland, NC

24

6.5 US-70/I-40 Connector – I-40 EB Ramps

Analyses indicate that unsignalized intersection of US-70/I-40 Connector – I-40 EB Ramps
currently operates with short delays on the minor street approach (I-40 EB Ramp). The minor
street approach is expected to continue operating with short delays in the background condition.

The following improvements are recommended to accommodate projected site traffic demands:

• Restripe the existing eastbound right turn lane and remove right turn channelization on the I-
40 EB Ramp to provide a continuous shared left/through/right-turn lane
• Widen the I-40 EB Ramp to provide and exclusive eastbound left-turn lane with 400 feet of
storage and an appropriate taper
• Extend the existing exclusive southbound left-turn lane on US-70/I-40 Connector to provide
400 feet of storage and an appropriate taper
• Construct an additional northbound receiving lane on US-70/I-40 Connector.
• Install a traffic signal.

With the recommended improvements in place, the intersection is projected to operate at LOS C
in the weekday AM and PM peak hours and LOS D in the Saturday peak hour of the build-out
traffic condition. All approaches are expected to operate acceptably. SimTraffic simulations
indicate that queues are expected to be manageable and accommodated within the recommended
storage lengths. Therefore, no additional improvements are recommended at this intersection to
accommodate site traffic.

Table 6.5 summarizes the operation of the intersection for the existing (2019) and projected
(2023) background and build-out traffic conditions.

Table 6.5
Level-of-Service
US-70/I-40 Connector – I-40 EB Ramps
Condition AM Peak Hour
LOS (Delay)
PM Peak Hour
LOS (Delay)
Saturday Peak Hour
LOS (Delay)
Existing (2019) Traffic –
Unsignalized* EB – A (9.3) EB – A (7.5) EB – A (3.9)
Background (2022) Traffic –
Unsignalized* EB – A (9.3) EB – A (7.5) EB – A (4.0)
Build-out (2022) Traffic –
Signalized C (30.6) C (34.5) D (40.8)
* Note: HCM methodology does not report an overall level of service for unsignalized intersections. The level of
service and delay for the worst approach (per SimTraffic) are reported above for unsignalized intersections.

145
