Buc-ee’s – Efland, NC

22

6.3 Mt. Willing Road – I-40 WB Ramps

Analyses indicate that unsignalized intersection of Mt. Willing Road – I-40 WB Ramps currently
operates with short delays on the westbound minor street approach (I-40 WB Ramp) in each of
the studied peak hours. With the addition of background traffic, the minor street approach is
expected to continue operating with short delays in AM and Saturday peak hours but with
moderate delays in the PM peak hour.

The following improvements are recommended to accommodate projected site traffic demands:

• Construct a westbound left-turn lane with 280 feet of storage and an appropriate taper on the
I-40 WB Ramp
• Extend the existing channelized westbound right-turn lane on I-40 WB Ramp to provide a
continuous channelized westbound right-turn lane between West RI/RO Driveway and Mt.
Willing Road
• Restripe the existing westbound shared left-turn lane on I-40 WB Ramp to provide an
exclusive through lane
• Install a traffic signal.

With the recommended improvements in place, the intersection is expected to operate with short
delays in each of the studied peak hours in the build-out traffic condition. No queuing issues are
expected at this intersection based on SimTraffic simulations, and no additional improvements
are recommended at this intersection to accommodate site traffic.

Table 6.3 summarizes the operation of the intersection for the existing (2019) and projected
(2022) background and build-out traffic conditions.

Table 6.3
Level-of-Service
Mt.
