is going to change. And the teams that play the best will be the ones that can
adapt to it without griping about it because it is what it is.”
UNC continues testing three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday
– and the final results are potentially not available until early on Saturday,
which has forced Brown to prepare a contingency plan in case he or any of his
assistant coaches are unable to be on the sidelines when the game kicks off.
The Hall of Fame head coach has only shared that plan with his coordinators
to avoid such a hypothetical from becoming disruptive for his coaching staff.
“I told [the players] yesterday, and these are facts, that until Saturday
morning, we really don't know if we're going to play,” Brown said. “Then you
don't know who's going to coach the game and you don't know who's going to
play in the game until we get the test results back, so it's just what it is. And
that's kind of the way we've handled it. We have a sudden change on the field
when there's a turnover with the offense and the defense has got to go out
and score, or vice versa. This is a year of sudden change.
3COMMENTS
“If we get up on Saturday morning, and I've got the virus and I can't coach,
we've got to be quick to make some changes and that could happen to
anybody at any time. You've just got to be prepared for everything.”
All of the protocol decisions have been put in place by medical experts. Brown
has established a COVID-19 coordinating committee, consisting of Director of
Sports Medicine Dr. Mario Ciocca, head athletic trainer Luke Ross, senior
associate athletic director for capital projects/facilities Rick Steinbacher, senior
associate athletic director Dwight Hollier and associate athletic director Corey
Holliday, to work with the Orange County Health Department to determine
protocols.
