III. HRC Chair's Report <br /> A. Ms. Castillo reported that she attended the most recent Board of County <br /> Commissioners' (BOCC) meeting. She explained that she introduced herself as the new <br /> chair of the HRC. She said the she also announced the upcoming Pauli Murray Awards. <br /> She invited the BOCC members and told them to expect great things. <br /> IV. County Updates <br /> A. Ms. Annette Moore announced that the HR&R department is planning to host an event <br /> recognizing Orange County pioneering women. She explained that this would be in <br /> honor of women's history month and the centennial anniversary of the 191n <br /> amendment. She inquired if the HRC would like to be involved with this initiative. HRC <br /> members expressed interest to be involved. She noted that the event will be on March <br /> 29t"from 4pm-6pm at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill. Ms. Tara May noted that the <br /> event will be called "100 Years of Firsts: Celebrating Orange County Women". Ms. <br /> Moore invited HRC members to send HR&R staff names of pioneering Orange County <br /> women if they know of any. <br /> B. Ms. Moore announced HR&R are working with the Orange County Community <br /> Remembrance Coalition (OCCRC) and other community groups for an event on August 1, <br /> 2020. The name of the event will be The Expendability of the Black Body and the Nexus <br /> between Racial Terror Lynching,The Death Penalty and Mass Incarceration. She noted <br /> that negotiations are to have author, Anthony R. Hinton, as the speaker for the event. <br /> She assured HRC members that she will keep them updated on the event. <br /> C. Ms. Annette Moore encouraged members to begin thinking of topics or ideas of what <br /> they would like the HRC annual retreat to be like for this year. Ms. Castillo suggested <br /> that the retreat be with a facilitator for a way for members to share their reasons for <br /> joining the HRC and to build trust amongst one another. Ms. Ana Garcia-Turner <br /> reminded members that retreat is usually in the June. <br /> V. Review of the Orange County Non-Discrimination Ordinance DRAFT <br /> A. HRC members discussed their point of views on the DRAFT and made recommendations <br /> to some of the language in the DRAFT. Ms. Moore collected noted suggestions and <br /> recommendations and will communicate them to the Orange County Attorney's office. <br /> VI. HRC Events & Committee Reports <br /> A. Pauli Murray Awards <br /> 1. Ms. Castillo announced the winners for the awards. The adult winner is Mae <br /> McClendon and the youth winner was Thea Barrett. <br /> 2. HRC members discussed the current nomination and judging criteria. HRC <br /> members collectively agreed to reevaluate and clarify the criterion for next year. <br /> Ms. Castillo suggested having parameters on nominations and winners. Ms. <br /> Mahaley suggested adding Public Service as a category. Ms. Moore assured <br /> members that decisions for changing or altering how the awards are done next <br /> year can be things suggested to the BOCC. <br /> 3. Ms. Moore noted that the Collage Dance company will perform a dance as a part <br /> of the ceremony and Voices of Hope Choir will perform a couple of songs at the <br /> ceremony. <br /> B. 2020 Community Read <br /> 2 <br />
