OWASA ORANGE WATER AND SEWER AUTHORITY <br /> A public, non profit agency providing water, sewer and reclaimed water services <br /> to the Carrboro-Chapel Hill community. <br /> November 3 , 2017 <br /> Dr. Dorothy Cilenti, DrPH <br /> Interim Orange County Health Director <br /> 300 West Tryon Street <br /> Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br /> Subject : Water Fluoridation <br /> Dear Dorothy, <br /> Following public input and discussion at their meeting on October 26, 2017 (meetingvideo) ,ideo) , the <br /> OWASA Board of Directors would like to explore with the Orange County Health Department a <br /> County-wide process for periodic review of drinking water fluoridation to evaluate the latest <br /> scientific findings on the benefits for oral health and any harmful effects it may have on any <br /> aspect of health. While any future decision(s) on fluoridation for the Chapel Hill- Carrboro <br /> community will remain the responsibility of the OWASA Board, we recognize that the Orange <br /> County Health Department is a very important community resource for such health and safety <br /> matters . <br /> The OWASA Board discussed the following key components for review of fluoridation : <br /> • Open and transparent process that has been communicated to the public and stakeholders . <br /> • Individuals and organizations that both support and do not support fluoridation will be <br /> invited to provide input. <br /> • The latest science will be reviewed by dental and medical experts who have recognized <br /> credentials in their fields of expertise including all aspects of human health that could be <br /> affected by fluoridation. <br /> • The review will specifically address key concerns raised by those who do not support <br /> fluoridation. <br /> • The observations and findings of the review will be communicated to the public and <br /> stakeholders in a clear and understandable way. <br /> As a next step, OWASA very much appreciates the Health Department' s timely feedback and <br /> recommendations regarding a County-wide process for periodic review of fluoridation. <br /> Thanks , <br /> Ed Kerwin <br /> Executive Director <br /> c : OWASA Board of Directors <br /> 400 Jones Ferry Road Equal Opportunity Employer Voice (919) 9684421 <br /> Carrboro , NC 27510- 2001 Printed on Recycled Paper www. owasa. org <br />
