An approved coupling meeting ASTM C-564 (Standard Specification <br /> for Rubber Gaskets for Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings) and ASTM <br /> C 1540 (Standard Specification for Heavy Duty Shielded Couplings <br /> Joining Hubless Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings) may be utilized to <br /> extend the casing. Use of such a coupling requires prior approval of <br /> the OCHD. <br /> 8. Grout shall be placed around the casing, extending from land surface to a <br /> depth of at least one foot below the joint formed by the casings. The grout <br /> shall have a minimum thickness of six inches extending horizontally from the <br /> casing. Other repairs to the well, or replacement may be necessary in addition <br /> to extension of the well head. <br /> 9. Well rehabilitation by non-continuous chemical treatment shall be conducted <br /> using methods and materials approved by the OCHD based on a <br /> demonstration that the materials and methods used will not create a violation <br /> of groundwater standards in 15A NCAC 2L, including rendering the <br /> groundwater unsuitable for its intended best use after completion of the <br /> rehabilitation. <br /> History Note: Substitute for NCAC 02C.0112 <br /> Eff. July 1, 2008;Amended eff. October 23, 2009;March 25, 2020 <br /> B. ABANDONMENT OF WELLS <br /> 1. A well that is temporarily removed from service shall be temporarily <br /> abandoned in accordance with the following procedures: <br /> a. The well shall be sealed with a water-tight cap or well seal, as defined <br /> in G.S. 87-85(16), compatible with the casing and installed so that it <br /> cannot be removed without the use of hand tools or power tools. <br /> b. The well shall be maintained whereby it is not a source or channel of <br /> contamination during temporary abandonment. <br /> 2. Permanent abandonment of water supply wells other than bored or hand dug <br /> wells shall be performed in accordance with the following procedures: <br /> a. All casing and screen materials may be removed prior to initiation of <br /> abandonment procedures if such removal will not cause or contribute <br /> to contamination of the groundwaters. <br /> b. The entire depth of the well shall be sounded before it is sealed to <br /> ensure freedom from obstructions that may interfere with sealing <br /> operations. <br /> c. Except in the case of temporary wells and monitoring wells, the well <br /> shall be disinfected in accordance with Section II (Q) of these Rules. <br /> d. In the case of gravel-packed wells in which the casing and screens <br /> have not been removed, neat-cement or bentonite slurry grout shall be <br /> injected into the well, completely filling it from the bottom of the <br /> 38 <br />
