20 <br /> 1 WHEREAS, after graduating from Chapel Hill High School, Major Caldwell graduated from <br /> 2 North Carolina Central University on a basketball scholarship with a degree in Recreation <br /> 3 Administration; and <br /> 4 <br /> 5 WHEREAS, Major Caldwell proudly served the United States Army as a Military Police Officer, <br /> 6 a Town of Carrboro as a Police Officer, and the residents of Orange County as a deputy sheriff <br /> 7 for a combined 40 years; and <br /> 8 <br /> 9 WHEREAS, in 2008, David Caldwell retired the Orange County Sheriff's Office and worked with <br /> 10 Orange County Government supporting community centers focusing on minority and rural <br /> 11 outreach; and <br /> 12 <br /> 13 WHEREAS, David returned to work for the Orange County Sheriff in 2016 as a Major in Support <br /> 14 Services, Community Outreach, retiring again in 2020; and <br /> 15 <br /> 16 WHEREAS, in carrying out his law enforcement duties, Major Caldwell jeopardized his own <br /> 17 safety and well-being to protect the lives and property of others and represents the finest <br /> 18 example of dedication to public service; and <br /> 19 <br /> 20 WHEREAS, Major Caldwell has, in his personal capacity, served as a leader in his community <br /> 21 fighting for the rights of those not in a position to fight for themselves; and <br /> 22 <br /> 23 WHEREAS, David Caldwell was one of the founding members and served with the Rogers- <br /> 24 Eubanks Neighborhood Association (RENA) as a Project Director; and <br /> 25 <br /> 26 WHEREAS, Major Caldwell has served as a mentor to the youth of the community by giving of <br /> 27 his time and money to develop and foster youth athletic, academic, and afterschool programs to <br /> 28 enhance their opportunities in life; and <br /> 29 <br /> 30 WHEREAS, Major Caldwell has worked tirelessly in partnership with the Orange County <br /> 31 Department on Aging, S.A.L.T., and countless other volunteer organizations to make certain the <br /> 32 lives of the senior population of Orange County were afforded the opportunity to age in place <br /> 33 with dignity, respect, and care; and <br /> 34 <br /> 35 WHEREAS, David Caldwell has been a lifelong resident of Orange County, a champion for <br /> 36 environmental justice, a career member of the Orange County Sheriff's Office and a respected <br /> 37 leader throughout the Orange County community; <br /> 38 <br /> 39 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby recognize the <br /> 40 contributions of Major David Lewis Caldwell, Jr. for his unwavering service to the people of <br /> 41 Orange County, and express our heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for his numerous and <br /> 42 invaluable contributions to the improvement and well-being of the Orange County community. <br /> 43 <br /> 44 FURTHERMORE, the Orange County Board of Commissioners determines Major David Lewis <br /> 45 Caldwell, Jr. is authorized to possess, and presents him with, the side-arm he carried while <br /> 46 serving as a member of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. <br /> 47 <br /> 48 AND FURTHERMORE, the Board profoundly thanks Major David Lewis Caldwell, Jr. for his <br /> 49 uncompromising commitment, dedication, and distinguished service to humanity and to the <br /> 50 residents of Orange County and wishes him a most enjoyable new journey in the next chapter of <br /> 51 his life. <br />
