BACKGROUND: Residents of Mel -Oak Drive (19 homes) and Mel -Oaks Trail (4 homes) in Mel - Oak Estates Subdivision have petitioned the North Carolina Department of Transportation ( NCDOT) to accept maintenance responsibilities for those roads. Mel -Oak Estates, approved by the Board in 1985 — 1986 (Phase I approved in 1985; Phases 2-4 approved in 1986), is located on the northwest side of Jones Ferry Road (SR 1942) between the intersections of Jones Ferry Road with Carolina Forest Road and Ferguson Road. NCDOT has investigated the request (see attached Secondary Road Addition Report) and has submitted the petition to the Board of Commissioners for its review and approval. The Board must take an administrative action to approve the petitions to NCDOT in order for NCDOT to accept Mel - Oak Drive and Mel -Oaks Trail into the State Maintenance Program. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no direct financial impact associated with this decision item. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Administration recommends that the Board approve the request to add Mel -Oak Drive and Mel -Oaks Trail to the State Secondary Road Maintenance Program.
