I volunteered as a Rape Crisis Counselor before medical school and <br /> worked in a psychiatric hospital. <br /> Initially, my longstanding interest and concern for the rights of women and those with psychiatric <br /> illness caused me to choose a primary care medicine path. <br /> I have served as Medical Co-Director of UNC s Beacon Child and Family Program (serving <br /> survivors of violence) and have taught and performed research in the field of intimate partner <br /> violence and trauma informed care locally, nationally and internationally. <br />
