1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: September 1, 2020 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 6-d <br /> SUBJECT: Discussion Regarding the Recital of the Pledge of Allegiance at Board of <br /> Commissioners' Meetings <br /> DEPARTMENT: Board of Commissioners <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Bonnie Hammersley, 919-245-2300 <br /> PURPOSE: To discuss, based on petitions previously presented to the Board, the potential <br /> recital of the Pledge of Allegiance at all Board of Commissioners' meetings. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Board of Commissioners has previously received petitions requesting <br /> that the Board consider reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at all Board meetings. This item <br /> responds to those requests and gives Board members an opportunity to discuss the potential <br /> recital of the Pledge at meetings. <br /> If the Board determines to move forward with reciting the Pledge at some or all meetings, staff <br /> will incorporate the Pledge recital into future meeting agendas as appropriate and will also draft <br /> an amendment to the Board's Rules of Procedure, to be considered at a future meeting, to <br /> formalize the practice. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with discussing the potential <br /> recital of the Pledge of Allegiance at Board of Commissioners' meetings. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: There is no Orange County Social Justice Goal impact associated <br /> with this item. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal <br /> impact associated with this item. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board discuss the potential <br /> recital of the Pledge of Allegiance at Board of Commissioners' meetings and provide any <br /> direction to staff as appropriate. <br />
