Blackwood, <br />919.245.2900 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />PURPOSE: To receive a report on the Sheriff’s efforts to achieve more equitable policing. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of the devastating deaths of George Floyd, Breonna <br />Taylor, and David McAtee, the topic of equity and racial justice in policing has come in to sharp <br />focus on both the national and local stages. Sheriff Blackwood will address the Commissioners <br />about the efforts of the Sheriff’s Office to build community trust, address implicit bias, and identify <br />and implement best practices to address racial disparities in policing. <br /> <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this report. <br /> <br />SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to <br />this item: <br /> GOAL: CREATE A SAFE COMMUNITY <br />The reduction of risks from vehicle/traffic accidents, childhood and senior injuries, gang <br />activity, substance abuse and domestic violence. <br /> <br />ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal <br />impact associated with this item. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the report from <br />Sheriff Blackwood and be apprised of this information. <br />1
