DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />None Rod Visser, ext 2300 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider reappointing John Smith, Jr. as Orange County Tax Assessor for a <br />two year term, effective July 1, 2001. <br />BACKGROUND: Chapter 105-294 of the North Carolina General Statutes requires the Board <br />of County Commissioners to appoint a tax assessor for a period of not less than two, nor more <br />than four, years. John Smith, Jr. was appointed as Orange County Tax Assessor in August <br />1996 to complete the unexpired term of Kermit Lloyd. He was reappointed for the two year <br />periods July 1, 1997 -June 30, 1999, and July 1, 1999 -June 30, 2001. Orange County's <br />practice has been to make appointments to the office of Tax Assessor fortwo-year terms. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board reappoint John Smith, Jr. <br />as Orange County Tax Assessor for a period of two years, effective July 1, 2001. <br />
