1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: April 21, 2020 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 8-c <br /> SUBJECT: Refunding a Portion of the Solid Waste Programs Fee for Residents Being <br /> Provided Curbside Recycling Service by the City of Mebane <br /> DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Robert Williams, 919-918-4902 <br /> John Roberts, 919-245-2318 <br /> PURPOSE: To provide refunds for the last three years for the portion of the Solid Waste <br /> Program fee allocated to curbside recycling to single family homes in the City of Mebane that <br /> pay for and receive curbside recycling from the City of Mebane. <br /> BACKGROUND: Orange County Solid Waste offers curbside recycling collection to all single <br /> family homes within the County. Single family homes within the corporate limits of Chapel Hill, <br /> Carrboro and Hillsborough are currently collected by a private firm under contract with Orange <br /> County's Department of Solid Waste Management. <br /> Single family homes lying within Orange County that are located within the corporate limits of <br /> the City of Mebane receive curbside recycling collection from the City of Mebane. City leaders <br /> have requested that the City of Mebane residents paying for Orange County curbside recycling, <br /> but are being serviced by the City, be refunded the portion of the Solid Waste Program Fee <br /> allocable to curbside recycling. Orange County Solid Waste worked with the Orange County <br /> Tax Department to identify those homes owners that have paid the Solid Waste Programs Fee <br /> and otherwise qualify for the proposed refund. <br /> The refunded amount is for the previous three calendar years, and the single family homes <br /> within the City of Mebane will not be charged that portion of the Solid Waste Programs Fee <br /> allocable to curbside recycling collection going forward.
