.~
ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 5, 2001
Action Agenda
Item No. g.-~
SUBJECT: Agreement Renewal Between Orange County and UNC Hospitals for (3) Three
Medicaid Caseworkers
DEPARTMENT: Social Services PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No
ATTACHMENT(S): Agreement INFORMATION CONTACT:
Martin Whitt , ext 2858
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Hillsborough 732.5181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7$31
Mebane 336-227-2031
PURPOSE: To consider an Agreement Renewal between Orange County and UNC-Hospitals
for three (3) hospital-based Medicaid Intake Caseworkers.
BACKGROUND: Three full-time Medicaid Intake Caseworkers are stationed at UNC-Hospitals
to conduct interviews and initiate Medicaid applications, mainly for out of county residents. This
Agreement began in 1977 at the request of the Hospitals as a means to increase collection
rates for indigent patients. Since this arrangement is for the benefit of UNC-Hospitals, the
Agreement stipulates that 100% of all Orange County's costs for these workers be reimbursed
by the facility.. The reimbursement includes salary, benefits, indirect costs, 15% of the salary
and benefits of a full-time Department of Social Services supervisor, and any other necessary
expense.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The County's share of all costs associated with these positions is
reimbursed by UNC-Hospitals.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends approval of the Agreement for Fiscal
Year 2001/2002 and authorization for the Chair to sign.
