The Department accomplishes this through the
following methods:
• Coordinate services through the five JOCCA-operated senior meal sites, providing
facility space and access services in these locations. Fixed transportation routes are
operated for those who reside outside the municipal bus service azea and bus passes
are made available for low-income seniors in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. The
Information and Referral Specialist makes monthly visits to each of the meal sites to
remind participants of the services available and assist individuals in accessing
resources to meet their needs.
• Provide low and no-cost programs and activities at each of the four senior centers,
with scholarships available far those activities that have a fee attached. These
offerings are advertised in the free departmental bi-monthly publication, the Senior
Times. The Senior Times is distributed at the centers, mailed to the participants'
homes, and inserted in the Sunday edition of the Chapel Hill Herald with a
distribution of approximately 25,000 households in Orange County.
• Work closely with the Department of Social Services to assure that in-home and
institutional respite care services aze targeted to those lo~-r-income individuals who
could benefit.
