Orange County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council Meeting <br /> Friday, October 2, 2015 (12900noon — 2 * 00pm) <br /> Hillsborough Commons <br /> Hillsborough, NC <br /> Proposed Minutes <br /> Attendees : Meg McGurk, Jeff Reilly, Jeff Nieman, Ashley Taylor, Tom Velivil, Lee Barnes, <br /> Jay Bryan, Kristi Price, Peggy Hamlett, Tina Sykes, Bernard Miles , Sharron Hinton, Val <br /> Hanson, Jennifer Feinstein, Susan Worley, Abby Hylton, Tom McQuiston, Paul Atherton, Tami <br /> Pfeifer, Marci White, Danielle Butler, Denise Briggs, Carmen Johnson, Rebekah Rapoza <br /> (*Members in Bold) <br /> Welcome <br /> The meeting opened with a welcome from Chair, Meg McGurk and introductions . <br /> Minutes Review and Approval <br /> The Council reviewed the minutes . Corrections to minutes : Dispute Settlement Center has not <br /> met FY 15/ 16 goal but "is well on our way"; correction to spelling of Jeff Nieman ' s last name. <br /> Kristi Price motioned for minutes to be approved with corrections and was seconded by Jeff <br /> Neiman . Motion carried unanimously. <br /> Agency Roundtable <br /> Chair asked for programs to give an update. <br /> Boomerang — Has a new space and has now moved in (old Rape Crisis building on Estes Dr. in <br /> Chapel Hill) . Kids helped with a lot of the moving and renovations . Most of the space is <br /> functional and has been having alternative suspension and after-school programming. <br /> Alternative suspension program just opened on Sept 8 or 9 and hasn' t had a lot of numbers, but <br /> afterschool had 44 instances of community service in August, with over 157 hours, and <br /> September had almost 50 hours of community service (fewer hours now that kids are back in <br /> school) . <br /> We will be partnering with the Y Outreach Program to offer opportunities for community service <br /> hours . Boomerang will help train the youth to provide homework help to K-5 students and will <br /> probably offer the use of their new space for this . Also, we are looking to partner with the <br /> daycare and help train the kids to work there and will also help them gain job skills . <br /> School Liaison — Started off with a total of 40 referrals between Orange and Chatham counties <br /> and have already done intakes on about one-third have been admitted and one-third scheduled. <br /> Orange County has about 6 admitted and is expecting that number to quadruple . r <br /> Volunteers for Youth — Has new Community Service Coordinator, Alex Lowery, who speaks <br /> fluent Spanish. We are having a program on Oct. 26 that UNC Law Students will be presenting <br /> on "Know Your Rights" and will be kids for attend at the Chapel Hill Public Library. <br /> The Third Sector Alliance is coordinating 3 listening session at Chapel Hill Public Library for <br /> students to meet with non-profits to hear about what their needs are and will be doing a capstone <br /> project. These will be happening 3 Mondays in October ( 12th, 19th, and 26th from 3 - 5pm) and <br /> Susan will send out more information. <br /> MHAT — FAN has not had many new admissions this fiscal year but has helped a lot through <br /> referrals . We have completed 3 Common Sense Parenting courses . Has sponsored and hosted a <br />
