Vision for park would satisfy many divergent needs ( 1 / 16/2002 , CHN) Page 2 of 3
building active recreation facilities , such as, soccer fields .
" The committee listened to all of those concerns , " Hemminger said . " We feel
like we came up with a good solution . "
The town mandated a minimum of two soccer fields on the site , which are
included, and the committee suggests leaving space for a possible youth- size
athletic field .
A town-mandated dog park and recycling center also are part of the park,
although on opposite ends . Near the recycling center are two basketball courts
and a lighted roller hockey court .
Just south of those facilities is space for a community center with an outdoor
pool, which is not included in cost estimates for the facility.
Beyond the community center is a bocce ball court and outdoor stage and
performance area with capacity for 50 to 100 spectators . Plans call for about
155 parking spaces located in three lots throughout the park .
On the other side of the possible community center would be a water park for
children that would include sprinklers and sprayers but no pools with standing
water . Beside the children' s water park would be the first of four picnic shelters ,
including one big enough for large- scale family reunions .
The soccer fields would be located in the center of the facility but away from
the homes along Dogwood Acres Drive , and two pedestrian crossings would
provide walking access to a youth baseball field and meadow south of
Dogwood Acres Drive .
Trails throughout the park would connect to the existing greenway that runs
il system could be shared by a disc golf through Southern Village, and the tra
course .
While council member Pat Evans questioned whether trail walkers and disc golf
players could peacefully co - exist in the future park, the most immediate conflict
in the process could come over funding and control of the park .
I,
Right now, funding for the park could include $ 895 , 000 from a countywide
park bond passed in 1997 and $2 million from the countywide park bond passed
last year .
The county has asked Chapel Hill and Carrboro to re- examine the policies of
who controls the parks and who pays for them , considering that the majority of
funds come from county bond referenda.
" The unanswered question at this point is what our relationship is going to be
with the county as we partner to construct parks and increase recreation
opportunities and what process we are going to agree upon for managing those , "
http $ //www . chapelhillnews . com/Issues/2002/01 / 16/newsOI . html 01 / 16/2002
