LAND MANAGEMENT <br /> Orange County will hold and manage most lands acquired through the <br /> Lands Legacy program. The County's Land Conservation Manager, within ♦� � I I I%%� <br /> ARAM <br /> the Environment and Resource Conservation Department, has a primary DS 11hirathGACY <br /> role in carrying out the duties necessary to implement the program. <br /> The first project under the new Lands Legacy program was the March 2000 � <br /> purchase of a 63-acre part of Duke Forest adjacent to the Eno River.and <br /> McGowan Creek. The McGowan Creek Preserve was acquired for <br /> watershed protection and will feature low-impact trails for the public to <br /> � � CADUtiiiirty <br /> enjoy in a beautiful woodland setting. <br /> Orange County is currently working with Durham County, the Triangle Land <br /> Conservancy and the Eno River Association to establish the Little River <br /> Regional Park and Natural Area, a_ 391-acre recreation and natural <br /> area preserve. <br /> The majority of funding for both projects came from state grants. <br /> ANNUAL ACTION PLAN <br /> An annual action plan will identify acquisition priorities for each upcoming <br /> year. The county commissioners in May 2000 approved an interim action <br /> plan for FY2000-01. Copies are available from ERCD and on our web site. - <br /> PROTECTING SPECIAL PLACES <br /> The population of Orange County increased by 67,000 people to 112,000 <br /> from 1960 to 1998. An additional 64,000 people are expected to reside in <br /> the County by 2030—an increase larger than the current population of `= <br /> Chapel Hill. More and more of the natural landscape will be converted to - <br /> accommodate these new residents.
