To address this issue , a follow-up study by a graduate class in 1993 evaluated the <br /> possible linkages from Duke Forest to the Eno River State Park. The recommendations <br /> for Orange County included sets of recreational trails and wildlife corridors . The <br /> following lists a summary of the suggestions . <br /> Recreation Trail <br /> • The construction of a free standing pedestrian bridge - - or pedestrian lane in <br /> conjunction with the proposed Eno Drive bridge -over I - 85 <br /> • The acquisition of a trail easement through purchase or, when possible , <br /> through use of the required setbacks of Orange County ' s Major Transportation <br /> Corridor Overlay District . <br /> • The construction and maintenance of a trail within highway rights of way and <br /> the acquired easement . - - <br /> Wildlife Corridor <br /> • The construction of a wildlife underpass at the intersection of I - 85 and US 70 . <br /> • The acquisition of land along the corridor, much of which is within <br /> floodplains , through fee simple purchase or, when possible , by promoting <br /> cluster development <br /> P . <br /> The report concluded that the Orange County Recreation and Parks Department should be <br /> responsible for maintaining and managing the recreational trails , while the North Carolina <br /> State Park Ranges should maintain and manage the wildlife corridors . <br /> Action <br /> The Master Plan outlines a chronological order for implementation . All land acquisition <br /> was to be completed in the first 10 years . In the second ten years , trail construction and <br /> completion is to occur . The following is a list of the actions taken since 1991 in <br /> implementing the Master Plan . — <br /> All governments adopted the New Hope Comdor Masten Plan to their compzehensive , <br /> map and joint planning agreement plans . <br /> • The Durham division of the Duke Forest has remained protected land . <br /> • The land south of U . S . 15 - 501 , owned by the Army Corps of Engineers has remained <br /> protected . - - <br /> 313 acres of the Corridor have been purchased by the City of Durham, . Durham <br /> County and the Triangle Land Conservancy , <br /> The Town of Chapel Hill has recently been awarded $ 200 , 000 by the directors of the <br /> state ' s Clean Water Management Trust Fund to acquire land north of the town limits <br /> _ within the New Hope Corridor . This funding was granted to the Chapel Hill Parks and <br /> Recreation Department . <br />
