page 5
Issue 9 : Fewer Programs for Adolescent Females
Findin : There are fewer programs for at-risk, adolescent females .
Recommendations to Staff:
• Increase the number of programs that attract adolescent females . These programs
may include a . Night Flight Basketball program , music classes , women Is defense
training , exercise classes , babysitter training , etc. .
• Create marketing efforts that include special materials for female programs .
• Involve adolescent females in program planning .
Issue 10 : Interagency Cooperation
Finding : There are few opportunities for community-wide , communication and
cooperation among the recreation departments and agencies that serve at-risk youth .
Recommendations to Staff:
• Create networks between recreation departments , schools , service organizations ,
churches , and other youth agencies to share information , recruit staff, provide mentors ,
provide facilities , provide interpretation services , and any other support needed to
connect at-risk youth to positive and useful activity .
• Request that The Orange County Manager' s Office initiate coordination of annual
conferences , grant -writing workshops , round-table discussions , and other
communication .forums sponsored by various agencies , schools , and departments .
Conclusion
Inherent in the recommendations is the need for more involvement by trained
professionals , increased interagency cooperation , and wider community involvement by
agencies and individuals in addressing the needs of at-risk youth . It is acknowledged
that no single program or intervention will be the answer for the complex challenges at-
risk youth present. However , if these recommendations are implemented collectively , and
11
if they complement the services of other. agencies , then our community could make a
difference in the lives of at-risk youth .
