Page 4 <br /> Issue 6 : Life Skills Training <br /> Findings : <br /> Older youth who are at-risk do not have the independent life skills to take advantage of <br /> public transportation , apply for jobs , and/or do activities necessary to access recreation <br /> programs . <br /> Recommendations to Elected Officials : <br /> • Have Transportation Department sponsor parent/child ridership program with free rides <br /> for children ages six to twelve to teach them how to ride public transportation . <br /> • Have Transportation Department provide a month-long program for adolescents that <br /> results .in free admission to a dance or concert to encourage teen ridership . <br /> Recommendations to Staff: <br /> • Support and create programs that teach independent living skills . These programs may <br /> include free swimming clinics , life-guard training , job counseling , service 1earning <br /> projects , and special programs for teen -aged girls . <br /> • Pilot a modified Night Flight Basketball Program for 16A 8 year olds for boys and girls . <br /> • Incorporate transportation and life skills training in appropriate recreation programs . <br /> Issue 7 : Increase Youth _ Job Opportunities <br /> Finding : Teens need more opportunities for after school and summer employment. <br /> Recommendations to Elected Officials : <br /> • Request that the Chambers of Commerce create apprenticeship and job placement <br /> programs through their business membership . <br /> • Create summer jobs for at-risk adolescents through appropriate government <br /> departments . <br /> Issue 8 : Multicultural At- Risk Needs <br /> Finding : In our multicultural community , insufficient means are available to bridge <br /> language or cultural barriers in recreation programs . <br /> Recommendations to Staff: <br /> • Identify community resources for serving the Hispanic population . <br /> • Hire personnel who can speak Spanish . <br /> • Involve and hire members of the Latino community to create culturally relevant programs <br /> ( i . e . soccer programs , cultural celebrations , blended -culture programs , etc. ) , and <br /> encourage them to serve on volunteer boards . <br />
