Enlist the assistance <br /> of interns with Web site design experience . <br /> Issue 5 : Staff Shortages <br /> Findin s : <br /> • There is a shortage of professional or trained staff to work in youth recreation programs . <br /> This has a direct impact on the number of youth programs available . <br /> • Summer recreation programs serve a high percentage of at-risk youth . These youth <br /> require professional or trained staff. <br /> • Wages in public recreation are often too low to attract professional or trained staff. <br /> Recommendations to Elected Officials : <br /> • Increase wages for a limited number of summer day camps staff positions to attract <br /> sufficient professional/trained staff ( i . e. , B . E . H . teachers , school counselors , social <br /> workers , PIC -trained personnel , etc. ) . These staff will train other staff and create <br /> programs to address behavioral problems experienced in summer recreation programs . <br /> A suggested wage range for these staff would be $ 12 to $20 per hour. <br /> • Create joint school/recreation summer programs to serve summer school students , <br /> sharing facilities and staff at the designated summer school sites . <br /> Recommendations to Staff: <br /> • Develop apprenticeship programs with UNC ' s Social Work, Leisure Studies , <br /> Adolescent Health , and Psychology Departments to recruit college students . <br />
