Retreat Planning
February 22 and March 1 were suggested as retreat dates . Lucy Lewis needs to check on
the date for the Human Relations Commission retreat .
Outcomes - review of achievements
Discussion was tabled until January . It was suggested that it would be helpful to review a
draft of achievements at that time .
Director ' s Report
Lucy reported on the County Commissioners ' goal- setting retreat . Alice Gordon had
asked why recommendations to the BOCC related to the Status Report on Women was
not part of next year ' s priority objectives, and Margaret Brown asked if the Commission
had ever considered follow-up to an earlier pay equity study done when she was a member
of the Commission . Lucy told the Commissioners that recommendations re : the Status
Report would be ongoing, and that the Commission would review the pay equity study .
Members agreed to ask both Commissioners Gordon and Brown to attend the January
meeting to discuss their concerns . The Department on Aging has asked the Commission if
it would like to cosponsor a bi - monthly breakfast meeting with elected officials ; members
agreed to the cosponsorship and staff will find out more about what that entails . Lucy met
recently with Gwen Price from Social Services ; Gwen reports that the new regulations will
mean that a person receiving public assistance will have 4 weeks to find a job , or else they
will have to do at least 30 hours of unpaid community service to continue receiving
benefits . The Commission may want to provide greater community awareness of what
changes in welfare will mean, conduct some kind of study of the impact of these changes ,
or make recommendations to the County Commissioners .
TO DO :
• Women ' s Health and Well -Being Committee needs to choose new chair
• Women and Children ' s Committee needs to choose new chair
• Women ' s History Month Committee needs to draft timeline for First Women of
Orange County for January meeting (first planning committee date, etc . )
0 Peachee Wicker will talk to Anson Dorrance re : women ' s soccer team info
• Winnie Morgan will invite County Commissioners to attend January meeting
Minutes submitted by Lucy Lewis
min1296
