She said Thomas Ruffin is buried here in Hillsborough, and no one has ever taken <br /> any action up to now. She said it is time that something is done. <br /> Commissioner Greene said the Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG) is having a <br /> meeting on February 5th on affordable housing, and both she and Chair Rich cannot attend. <br /> She said the meeting is asking for elected officials to attend. <br /> Commissioner Price thanked all of the organizers and participants of MLK events. She <br /> said the Durham Chapel Hill Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) approved a <br /> release of a draft Unified Planning Work Program, and a public hearing will held at the next <br /> MPO meeting on February 12th in Durham. <br /> Commissioner Price said some constituents are concerned about the agreement <br /> between the UNC Board of Governors and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. She said she <br /> would like the BOCC to consider sending a letter of support. <br /> Chair Rich said MLK weekend was amazing, and she congratulated Carrboro on the <br /> grand opening of the MLK Park. <br /> 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/ Special Presentations <br /> a. National Mentoring Month Proclamation <br /> The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation designating January 2020 as <br /> National Mentoring Month in Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> Commissioner Price presented the information below: <br /> BACKGROUND: National Mentoring Month is a campaign held each January to promote youth <br /> mentoring in the United States. It was inaugurated in 2002, and has been spearheaded by the <br /> Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership. <br /> National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how <br /> individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits can <br /> work together to increase the number of mentors to help ensure positive outcomes for young <br /> people. The campaign celebrates mentoring and the positive effect it can have on young lives, <br /> with goals to: <br /> • Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms; <br /> • Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young <br /> people; and <br /> • Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their <br /> constituents in mentoring. <br /> Mentoring is a critical component in young people's lives, helping them make the decisions and <br /> connections that lead to opportunity. <br /> Commissioner Price introduced individuals representing various mentoring groups in <br /> Orange County: <br /> • Atrayus Goode, President and CEO, Movement of Youth <br /> • Charlene & Jeff Campbell, Co-Founders, Beyond Expectations, Inc. <br />
