DRAFT
2
Recycling Right NC
Rich asks if clam shells are accepted back into recycling.
Pollock states that there was no market for it before. The company that we pay to take the
recycling now has a market they can feed those into the remanufacturing process for a
clamshell making factory they own.
Marcoplos asks if the information is being announced at the Waste & Recycling centers.
Brown sates that we are in the process of making brochures and will be making mass
mailings for the urban and rural recycling routes.
Recycling Sort Data
Haven-O’Donnell asks what the potential of banning plastic bags is.
Pollock states this has come up repeatedly. The only model would be the Regulated
Recycling Materials Ordinance and was able to enforce our rules against landfilling of
certain materials. The State doesn’t enforce their statutory bans on aluminum cans and
plastic bottles.
Shred Center
Lavelle asks are people bringing it there to shred.
Woody states that after the resident makes an appointment, they can watch the material
being shredded or leave it and we shred it later.
Haven-O’Donnell asks what is recommended for residents that shred paper at home.
Woody states that residents that shred at home should take it to a Shred-A-Thon because
they may have more than paper such as CD in their material.
Pollock sates that shredded paper is no longer accepted in the curbside recycling.
Next Meeting
Marcoplos states that the next meeting will be January or February.
Hemminger states that there have been a lot of inquiries about the Simple Recycling
orange bag program since it aired on Live Spectrum. Raleigh and Morrisville are doing it,
Durham is starting it. Where are we?
Williams states that in the June meeting the SWAG board was tasked to reach out to the
non-profits to invite them here to hear what our plans were and get there thoughts. The
plan now for the next meeting is to invite WasteZero and the leaders from the non-profits to
hear the presentation to find out if what we are doing will impact their operations. The other
thing to consider is while Orange County has the technology in the trucks there will be an
additional cost for us to add a button to the trucks that allows the driver to indicate collection
for this service.
Hemminger states that it will reduce the tipping fee because there will be less waste going
to the landfill.
Williams states that that will benefit the Towns. The Towns will approve and authorize this.
The only thing the County will do is hit the button.
The next meeting will have a full agenda. WasteZero will be invited back to refresh us, the
non-profits, potentially Entsorga and possibly someone from Berkley County, SC.
Rich states that we should get a cost analysis for the program and the additional amount it
would cost the County. Why does it have to follow the recycling truck?
Williams states that they label it as a recycling diversion.
Rich states that with Entsorga we may also want to get information on if the end product
could be burned at the coal plant.
Public Comment – None
Meeting adjourned at: 7:19 pm
Name of Minute Taker Wanda McCain
