4 <br /> 1 County Board of Commissioners applauds Judge Fox's exemplary leadership in recognizing the <br /> 2 silent but very real impact that the portrait of Ruffin could have on the interests of fair and <br /> 3 impartial justice in Orange County and in taking appropriate action. <br /> 4 <br /> 5 *Op-ed published on Oct. 25, 2019, in the News & Observer, <br /> 6 https://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/article220326985.html <br /> 7 <br /> 8 Chair Rich said she asked Commissioner Greene to read this so the BOCC could <br /> 9 discuss it, possibly put it on letterhead, and send it to Judges Fox and Beasley. <br /> 10 Commissioner Marcoplos thanked Commissioner Greene. <br /> 11 Commissioner Dorosin said something should also be put on the County website. <br /> 12 Commissioner Price said the woman that was shot was named Lydia, which should be <br /> 13 recognized. She said Thomas Ruffin is buried here in Hillsborough, and no one has ever taken <br /> 14 any action up to now. She said it is time that something is done. <br /> 15 Commissioner Greene said the Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG) is having a <br /> 16 meeting on February 51" on affordable housing, and both she and Chair Rich cannot attend. <br /> 17 She said the meeting is asking for elected officials to attend. <br /> 18 Commissioner Price thanked all of the organizers and participants of MLK events. She <br /> 19 said the Durham Chapel Hill Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) approved a <br /> 20 release of a draft Unified Planning Work Program, and a public hearing will held at the next <br /> 21 MPO meeting on February 12`" in Durham. <br /> 22 Commissioner Price said some constituents are concerned about the agreement <br /> 23 between the UNC Board of Governors and the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. She said <br /> 24 she would like the BOCC to consider sending a letter of support. <br /> 25 Chair Rich said MILK weekend was amazing, and she congratulated Carrboro on the <br /> 26 grand opening of the MLK Park. <br /> 27 <br /> 28 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/ Special Presentations <br /> 29 <br /> 30 a. National Mentoring Month Proclamation <br /> 31 The Board considered voting to approve a proclamation designating January 2020 as <br /> 32 National Mentoring Month in Orange County and authorize the Chair to sign. <br /> 33 Commissioner Price presented the information below: <br /> 34 <br /> 35 BACKGROUND: National Mentoring Month is a campaign held each January to promote youth <br /> 36 mentoring in the United States. It was inaugurated in 2002, and has been spearheaded by the <br /> 37 Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership. <br /> 38 National Mentoring Month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how <br /> 39 individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits can <br /> 40 work together to increase the number of mentors to help ensure positive outcomes for young <br /> 41 people. The campaign celebrates mentoring and the positive effect it can have on young lives, <br /> 42 with goals to: <br /> 43 • Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms; <br /> 44 . Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have waiting lists of young <br /> 45 people; and <br /> 46 • Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their <br /> 47 constituents in mentoring. <br /> 48 Mentoring is a critical component in young people's lives, helping them make the decisions and <br /> 49 connections that lead to opportunity. <br /> 50 <br />
