ORANGE COUNTY <br /> ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCE CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> To : Historic Preservation Commission <br /> From : Rich Shaw, Land Conservation Manager <br /> Tina Moon , Historic Preservation/Land Use Planner <br /> Date : October 17 , 2001 <br /> Subject : Lands Legacy Action Plan for FY 2002 - 03 <br /> At your last meeting , Rich Shaw presented an overview of the County's many land <br /> acquisition projects completed through the Lands Legacy program . Rich also described <br /> some of the current projects underway and that we hope to accomplish by June 2002 . <br /> ERCD staff seeks input from the HPC for developing the Lands Legacy Action Plan for FY <br /> 2002 - 03 . That input can be in the form of specific projects or general guidance . The plan <br /> will identify natural and cultural areas that the County will work on protecting through land <br /> acquisition or other means during the next year . <br /> Recommendations from the HPC should be finalized at your October 24 <br /> meeting so that a draft Action Plan can be prepared and submitted to the <br /> BOCC for consideration at its annual December retreat , ERCD staff will use <br /> HPC recommendations along with those from the Commission for the Environment, <br /> Agricultural Preservation Board , and Recreation and Parks Advisory Council to <br /> develop the Action Plan . <br /> Comments from September 26 <br /> The following points were offered and discussed by the HPC at your last meeting : <br /> • Still interested in the protection of the Faucette Mill area . <br /> • Interested in the protection of the Smith - Cole house and grounds . <br /> • Interested in the protection of Halls Mill dam . <br /> • Interested in making sure funds are available for protecting historic structures on lands <br /> that County acquires for parks and open space protection ( e . g . , structural protection , <br /> professional evaluation/cost estimates, restoration when feasible/appropriate) . <br /> • Interested in advising BOCC that County needs to protect historic structures on County <br /> property . (A memo to BOCC and County Manager was proposed . ) <br /> • Continue to acquire parkland that has a historic component . <br /> • HPC is interested in making site visits (field trips) to Little River Park, Cate Farm <br /> • HPC would like to be involved in planning Chapel Hill Twp , District Park (Cate farmstead <br /> portion ) ; perhaps have a seat on planning committee . <br /> Environment and Resource Conservation <br /> PO Box 8181 / 306-A Revere Road <br /> Hillsborough, NC 27278 <br /> (919) 245-2597 <br />
