2 <br /> Shaw reviewed ' the Lands Legacy program from its adoption in April 2000 to its most recent <br /> acquisition and explained the Annual Action Plan (AAP ) process . The AAP includes goals , a <br /> summary of advisory board comments , specific action objectives , and a priority list of land <br /> acquisition and protection projects for the coming year . Shaw gave a report of actions from <br /> previous plans and noted that during the first two years of the Lands Legacy program , the county <br /> had acquired 482 acres of new parkland and protected another 70 acres of farmland . Funding <br /> sources included the 1997 Park Bond and over $ 1 . 1 million in state and federal tgrants , The <br /> following projects listed below were identified in the Lands Legacy Action Plan . Some of these <br /> projects included cultural/resource protection components , such as the protection of a 19th century <br /> chimney/homesite at McGowan Creek , a well - preserved 1920s farm house and associated <br /> outbuildings at the Cate Farm and a 19th century cabin also at the Cate Farm . <br /> • McGowan Creek Preserve 63 acres <br /> • Little River Regional Park 136 acres <br /> • Chapel Hill Township Park 149 acres <br /> • Seven Mile Creek Preserve 134 acres <br /> • Walters Farm Agricultural Easement 70 acres <br /> Also completed this year was an archaeological survey of the Little River park property, which will <br /> help the County to protect sensitive cultural sites and provide valuable information for interpretation . <br /> When evaluating potential acquisition sites , staff will consider how specific properties fit within the <br /> context of long -term trail linkages with existing parks and areas listed in the Joint Master Recreation <br /> and Parks Work Group Report as well as possible school sites for school/park co - location . Staff will <br /> continue to aggressively pursue grants to fund projects , and solicit the involvement of partner <br /> agencies , wherever possible . <br /> Shaw gave a partial year performance report on the Land Legacy program . <br /> • Received grants of $ 1 . 14 million toward land acquisitions as follows : <br /> • 377 , 000 from the Clean Water management Trust Fund and $250 , 000 from the NC Parks and <br /> Recreation Trust Fund for land acquisition for the Little River Regional Park and Natural Area . <br /> Also received a grant of $ 262 , 000 from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund for <br /> development of the park . <br /> • Purchased the Orange County portion ( 136 acres ) of the proposed 391 - acre Little River <br /> Regional park and Natural Area . <br /> • Closed on the McGowan Creek Preserve , a former Duke Forest landholding purchased from <br /> Duke University , using $ 143 , 000 in grant funds from the Clean Water management Trust Fund . <br /> • Received grant of $ 107 , 000 from Farmland Preservation Trust Fund for farmland conservation <br /> easement on Victor Walters ' s farm in Cedar Grove Township . <br /> • Received grant of $ 5 , 000 from the NC Natural Heritage Program for an update of Orange <br /> County' s inventory of Natural Areas and Wildlife Habitat . <br /> • Established the Orange County Land Conservation Alliance , bringing together staff from <br /> partner entities in land conservation to share information for potential collaboration on resource <br /> protection projects . <br /> The following objectives for Orange County acquisition or protection of cultural or archaeological <br /> sites are listed in the current action plan for Lands Legacy ( FY 2001 -02 ) . <br /> 1 . Continue efforts to accomplish preservation of cultural and archaeological sites associated with <br /> parkland acquisitions during this timeframe . <br /> 2 . Develop a plan , and identify acquisition priorities for proposed " heritage corridors" in central <br /> Orange County, a multi -year objective of protecting colonial and pre-colonial historic sites and <br /> roadway corridors , such as St . Marys Road , Indian Trading Path , John Lawson Trail , historic <br /> Grayfields , prominent Revolutionary War battlefields and other areas . <br /> Draft September 26 , 2001 HPC minutes Page 2 of 4 <br />
