Metal sculptors Bill Flinn and Emily Lewis have almost completed the metal <br /> decorative arches to be installed at either end of the alley space. A masonry contractor is now being secured to begin the <br /> installation of the surface pavers and creating the footings that will anchor the arches . Other plans include purchasing benches <br /> and container trees/plantings to complete the project and make it more inviting for the public enjoying downtown. The project, <br /> sponsored by the Town Center Group and funded by the Hillsborough Tourism Board, is part of the downtown streetscape <br /> improvements plan developed by the Town Center Group with the help of the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, the Tourism <br /> Board and the N. C. Division of Community Assistance. Sponsors for the purchase of benches, trash containers and planters are <br /> needed. These concerts are sponsored by the Hillsborough Arts <br /> Council and consist of musical performances in private historic homes. This will be the third series of Parlour Concerts . <br /> Previous concerts, which began with a grant from the F.M. Kirby Foundation through the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and <br /> the Orange County Arts Commission, have been very well received Please watch for further details. <br /> Historical Society to Hold Annual Meeting <br /> The Hillsborough Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Sunday, October 14 at 3 p.m. at the Old <br /> Courthouse. The public is invited to attend. A presentation will be given by UNC professor Dr. Carolyn Connor based on her <br /> oral history project which is a featured article in Volume IV of the Society's Journal titled A Small Corner of Orange CountyIII,An Oral History: Reflections ofRobert Davis and Others . The Engstrom Award, which honors an individual or group who <br /> have made significant contn`butions in the areas of history or historic preservation, will also be given during the afternoon. <br /> Recent award winners include Lucile Dula, Quentin Patterson, and Allan Lloyd. Members of the Alliance for Historic <br /> Hillsborough/Historical Society can pick up a copy of the most recent Journal, Volume IV at the meeting. Members will <br /> receive a significant discount on the cost of the journal ($ 5 for members, $ 10 for non members) . This latest journal is very <br /> exciting with an introduction by Lee Smith, the article by Dr. Connor on oral history accounts of rural. Orange County life, an <br /> article by Journal editor Dr, Robert Ireland titled " Games We Played" based on memories shared by older residents of their <br /> childhood in Hillsborough, and a series articles written by the late local historian Clarence Jones. . <br /> The meeting is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.
