Local Project Updates : Rigsbee ' s Rock House , Cedar Grove Post Office Update
Moon updated the HPC on the status of Rigsbee ' s Rock house . ERCD staff has made
initial contacts with Archives & History (the State Historic Preservation Office) and NCDOT staff to
determine the most effective way to proceed .
Moon reported speaking to Renee Gledhill-Earley , who is in charged of the Section 106 process
with Archives & History . Section 106 refers to the federal requirement to review state and federal
projects that may impact National Register sites . The Cedar Grove Post office fits into that category and
post office projects have to go through them. Ms . Gledhill-Earley provided staff with a contact person for
post office projects and made initial contact . She said their office will keep an eye out for any proposals
for the Cedar Grove community , and keep us informed .
Moon also reported that staff had sent a letter to the owners of the Smith-Cole House on Smith
Level Road in Chapel Hill Township . Staff has been in contact with the Town of Carrboro regarding
strategies to preserve this important house . Carrboro has agreed to amend their Land Use Ordinance to
provide for the designation of individual local landmarks if the owners are interested in participating .
Should the property be designated as a local landmark the owners would be eligible for the 50 % property
tax deferral . Currently the Town ' s program is for districts only and this will be a first for individual
landmark designation .
Connor invited everyone to a walls down the trading path by the mill , mill pond , and ford over the
Eno at Faucette Mill to view the mill and boat house , on Sunday at 2 : 00 p . m.
Anderson reported speaking to David Southern a local historian who has been involved with the
Trading Path research for years . He has an independent view of the location of the path and has put in
years of research on roads . He thinks that is the Coach Road instead of the Trading Path . We may have
to reconsider our research on that road . Golan added that he had read some of Maude Faucette ' s journal
and that she talked about the Lebanon Road being know as the Stage Coach Road .
b .
