John Lawson/Enoe Will Tercentennial Celebration
On the weekend of February 1748, 2001 , The Trading Path Preservation Association and the Eno River Association
will host a Tercentennial Celebration of John Lawson and Enoe Will' s passage through this area three hundred years ago. In
February 1701 John Lawson , a young Englishman with and adventurous streak, made this trek over what he called a `sad and
stony way' guided by Enoe Will. Lawson had begun his travels in Charleston, and had hiked from the Piedmont along the Great
Indian Trading Path to Acconeechi or Occaneechi Town (near modern day Hillsborough) . Leaving the Trading Path ' at that
point, Lawson then followed another trail to Enoe Will's village , Adshusheer (near present day Durham) .
On Saturday, February 17 , hikers will reenact Lawson's and Will's trek from "Acconeechi to Adshusheer" (Hillsborough
to Durham) . The trek will be open to the public but space will be limited. Organizers ask that if you are interested in
participating, that you enroll for the hike by either sending email to la«rsontreke(% tradinQr. ath . a>m or by calling the Trading Path
Preservation Association (919 - 732. 6957) . The trek will depart from the reconstructed • Occaneechi village site* on the banks of the
Eno River behind the county courthouse in Hillsborough soon after 8 . 00 a .m. on February 17th . The hike will end in the vicinity
of the intersection of Kerley Road and Mt. Sinai Road, just off of Erwin Road, west of its intersection with Cornwallis Road.
Efforts will be made to coordinate transportation back to the departure point for participating hikers .
Take note, hikers , please do not expect this reenactment to be a casual stroll . Lawson himself wrote that he was lamed
by the fourteen mile jaunt from Occaneechi to Adshusheer. Our trek will approximate Lawson' s route by following remnants of
the Great Central Coast Trail that later became the Hillsborough to Fayetteville Road. There will be long stretches of overland
hiking without trails at all. ' So, be prepared for an arduous day.
At .1 ;.00 p .m.. on Sundray, February 18, at the Fews Ford Section of the Eno fiver Ctnte Par { (P. . om, 5 . 7 miles out Cole
Mill Road from I. 85) there will be a presentation by Archaeology Professor Steve Davis , and local experts , Tom Magnuson, and
Dave Southern, about the Piedmont tribes, and the locations of the paths and villages visited by Lawson in 1701 . These
presentations will be at the Eno River State Park Headquarters . Immediately following the presentations, at approximately 2e00
p. m. , Davis , Magnuson and Southern will accompany hikers on a guided hike on selected paths in the Eno River State Park. This
hike will last for approximately two hours and be between 3 .5 miles in length. For more information please call Tom Fowler at
919. 493 - 6296 . (Adapted from information on Eno River Association website auww. enonver. org)
Watch for future monthly hikes sponsored by the Trading Path Association at varying locations . Plans are to sponsor a
different hike the first Sunday of every month. For more information, consult the Treading Path Association website at
www. tradingpath. org.
