<br /> Hillsborough Historic CommisSion Receives Grant
<br /> from the F . M . Kirby Foundation
<br /> The Historic Hillsborough Commission has been awarded $5000 in grant funding from the F .M . Kirby Foundation of
<br /> Morristown , N .J . The Commission , which owns and administers the Burwell School' Historic Site , will use the funding to
<br /> enhance the educational programs offered by the site.
<br /> The Burwell School Historic Site has been a key component in Hillsborough' s heritage tourism program that focuses
<br /> on the town' s cultural and architectural history . The site now has regular operating hours and offers a variety of programs to its
<br /> visitors . The enhanced programs , made possible by the Kirby grant, will emphasize an authentic quality experience for tourists ,
<br /> residents , and school groups . .
<br /> The funds will be used to purchase authentic reproduction 19th century clothing for interpreters and to purchase
<br /> reproduction 19th century household, personal , and school items and materials for the Burwell house and the brick music
<br /> building. In the upcoming months, visitors to the site will have the impression they are walking through a space where '
<br /> someone from the past is actually living. The funds will also allow the development of curriculum-based educational programs
<br /> that meet the learning objectives of the NC Department of Public Instruction . The site 's current school programs which
<br /> include "History Detective, " "Then and Now , " "This Was a School? ", and " Student Reporter" uril be more as
<br /> providing hands - on learning activities for students . Living history will also play, a more active role in the site' s programming in
<br /> the near future . •
<br /> The Historic Hillsborough Commission , composed of twenty- nine state appointed Commissioners , is a non-profit
<br /> member organization of The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough. Theo Burwell School Historic Site is open to the public
