The exhibit includes pieces of Thomas Day furniture that are a part of the Burwell School Historic Site collection and pieces <br /> on loan from the private collections of Hillsborough residents . <br /> A free African-American, Thomas Day ( 1801 - c. 1860) is remembered today as one of the South's most extraordinary furniture <br /> makers . In the 1820s Day was connected to Hillsborough before moving north to Milton, NC where he established the largest furniture <br /> shop in the state by the 1850s . During his career, Day provided furniture and interior architecture for homes throughout the Carolina <br /> Piedmont and Southside Virginia . <br /> Over fifty people attended the exhibit opening on May 18 featuring a slide presentation by Laurel Sneed, Executive Director of the <br /> Thomas Day Project, titled "Thomas Day, Free Man of Color ." <br /> The Burwell School Historic Site is owned and administered by the state appointed Historic Hillsborough Commission, a non-profit <br /> member organization of The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough .
