The results of the construction work and improvements have been <br /> Lou Mitchell remarkable. The interior of the Capitol has been restored to its 1840s appearance with original paint <br /> Charles Montgomery colors and decorative finishes applied in the legislative chambers, State Library, State Geologist' s <br /> Thus Marrow Jahn L. Sanders Office, and rotunda <br /> Samuel P. Townsend <br /> Gerald P. Traub On behalf of the Capitol staff and the State Capitol Foundation, Inc. , we would like to invite you and <br /> Joyce White members of your organization to join us in commemorating the completion of the restoration during <br /> Jo Ann Williford as a P a <br /> Jan Woodard a celebration of the 160'h anniversary of this National Historic Landmark. In June of 1840, the <br /> people of North Carolina celebrated the completion of construction of the Capitol with three days of <br /> Ex-OJl"tcio Members festivities. We would like to invite you to participate in a weekend of celebration on Friday, June 9 <br /> Senate President Pro Tem <br /> Maro Basnight and Saturday, June 10. <br /> Speaker of the House <br /> James Black On Friday the Capitol will host a Lecture series and reception featuring a distinguished panel of <br /> Dr. Jeffrey J Crow <br /> Carol C. Henderson experts who will discuss the restoration of the Capitol. Former president of the State Capitol <br /> Foundation and current chair of the State Capitol Advisory Committee John Sanders will provide a <br /> background on the history and construction of the Capitol. New Bern architect Paul Stephens, 1999 <br /> recipient of the Robert E. Stipe Award, will moderate a discussion between historical paint analyst <br /> George Fore* piaster restoration specialist Brian Ewing, and historical finishes expert Philip Ward <br /> about their efforts to restore the Capitol to its early appearance. After a reception on the grounds, <br /> William Seale, co-author of Temples of Democracy, a comprehensive history of the nation' s capitols, <br /> will discuss the North Carolina capitol in relation to the history of capitols in the United States from <br /> colonial times to present_ <br /> On June 10, 1840, the citizens of the state celebrated with a barbecue on Capitol Square. Bring your <br /> family and friends to the Capitol to relive this exciting day with food and entertainment throughout <br /> the afternoon. Area groups will provide music on the grounds, culminating with a concert by the <br /> 82nd Division Airborne Concert Band Throughout the days the Capitol will host an open house <br /> with guides available to share the rich history of the restored building. <br /> We are very excited about these upcoming events. We hope you will share our enthusiasm and join <br /> us for a closer look at your State Capitol.
