when she relocates the cemetery reported on Lockhill Farm. If an intensive
archaeological survey and testing program is instigated to search for the Lockhart family
ancestral site on Lockhill Farm, the archaeologists could incorporate a search for that
cemetery at that time , if its location remains unknown .
Quarries and mills-
It is recommended that no further work be undertaken on the quarry sites if these
sites are not threatened by development . The largest of the stone quarries, site
31 Or488 * * , does contain the huge landscape feature of the quarry, as well as numerous
cabin sites and a well-defined access road . If this site is threatened it is recommended
that an historical archaeological survey be undertaken to determine its eligibility for
nomination to the National Register of Historic Places . It may contain important above
and below ground cultural resources pertaining to mining and life at a mining camp . It is
believed that this quarry is located at Mt. Misery, an important eighteenth-century
landmark.
mills have been discussed in this report, only one Although a number of historic
mill, Berry ' s Private Mill, appears to be located in the project area along Strouds Creek.
The other mills are located along the no River, and are important, Orange County
cultural resources . (Orange County should consider an eventual archaeological survey of
the mill sites along the Eno River. This would include developing an historic context on
regional milling practices through time . ) For the purposes of the present project, Berry' s
Private Mill site should be located through an intensive, systematic archaeological survey
of the site area. The site , if found, should be investigated through subsurface testing to
determine the quality and quantity of below ground remains. The site ' s eligibility for
nomination to the National Register of Historic Places should be ascertained . The data
derived from this project will strengthen our understanding of an important facet of life in
the St . Mary' s area. It will also add important information to the interpretation of the
social and economic cultural practices at John Berry ' s plantation ( i . e . , Sunnyside) .
No further work is recommended at the two sawmill sites (Table 2) . These sites
are located south of the present estimated boundaries for the St. Mary ' s district . Saw-
milling was an integral part of rural life in the area. If these sites prove threatened in the
future , they should be systematically surveyed and tested to determine if either is eligible
for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places .
Prehistoric Sites-
No prehistoric sites have been located during this initial archaeological
investigation of the St . Mary ' s Road Corridor. Based on informant interviews, previous
archaeological research near the Eno , and on the models developed by Daniel ( 1994) , we
suspect that systematic, below ground testing of high and moderate areas of
archaeological potential ( i. e . , Daniel ' s Zone 1 , Zone 2 ; including areas comprised of
Altavista fine sandy loams) will reveal prehistoric sites . After discussions with members
of the historical commission and planning office , it is recognized that the County has
noted that there are high areas of prehistoric (and historic) site potential along the Eno
River and along portions of Strouds, Little, and Buckwater creeks . If any of these areas
are threatened with development or other earth moving activities, they should receive an
intensive , systematic archaeological survey to determine if any archaeological resources
50
